Children and adults have celebrated the Jewish new year for trees

Jewish community centre JW3 in Finchley Road, West Hampstead, staged an afternoon of activities on Sunday.

Visitors enjoyed a range of tree-themed activities for the Tu B’Shevat festival, which marks the beginning of the new year for trees in the Jewish calendar.

Children enjoyed seed-bombing, creating ecosystems in jars, tree-top tales and a tree-inspired art attack. They also spent time in the demonstration kitchen learning about Tu B’Shevat fruits.

Tu B’Shevat is held in the season when the earliest-blooming trees in Israel emerge after winter and start to bear fruit.

Liat Rosenthal, head of community programming at JW3, said: “The Tu B’Shevat family event was, true to its name, blooming marvelous.

“Tu B’Shevat is a great holiday for families to celebrate together – and at JW3 we relish the opportunity to reflect on our relationship with the natural world and inspire young people to become more environmentally conscious.”
