Esther Rantzen launches campaign to battle ‘isolation and loneliness’ of elderly in Camden

Journalist and broadcaster Esther Rantzen has been “spreading the message of love and care” by reaching out to older people across Camden.

Founder of charity, The Silver Line, and best-known for presenting the hit television series That’s Life! for 21 years, the 73-year-old TV star has joined forces with Bluebird Care to address “isolation and loneliness” among the elderly.

The Winter Cheer campaign will see 500 goody bags filled with information and advice on health and activities distributed to residents across Camden.

Community centres, hospices, hospitals and more than 350 households will benefit from visits throughout February.

Esther, who visited the Highgate home of Marian Burke last week, said: “We had a great day and met some wonderful people who welcomed us into their homes.

“A simple visit from someone, or a chat on the phone, can be so important.”

George Morris, managing director of Bluebird Care for Camden and Hampstead, said: “Older people are particularly vulnerable at this time of year, so we are encouraging everyone across the borough to fight loneliness and spread more love in the community.”
