Chairman of the Burgh House Trust and former Ham&High editor Matthew Lewin was joined by supporters including TV star Esther Rantzen at the event hosted by Burgh House director Jules Burns at his Chesterford Gardens home.

They were entertained by Hampstead singer Babs Savage, who recently saw her single, La La, top charts in the US.

Mr Lewin said: “It is now 38 years since the people of Hampstead rose up in rebellion against Camden Council’s proposal to sell Burgh House. The rebellion was successful, and the wisdom of the campaigners can now be vindicated by the fact that the house is a huge success story.

“It is a vibrant community arts centre bursting at the seams with activities of all kinds, from weddings and other private functions to art and history exhibitions, talks, lectures, interviews and concerts of all kinds – not to mention the fully accredited Hampstead Museum

“And, what’s more, Burgh House is entirely self sufficient. We don’t receive a penny from Camden or anyone else for running costs and we raise all the money we need to keep the house open by letting out parts of the house for functions.”
