Two guided walks will offer Hampstead Heath lovers the chance to hear more about the controversial dams project – as the deadline looms for residents to give their views.

Panel engineer Andy Hughes and Simon Lee, the outgoing superintendent of Hampstead Heath, will lead two tours on the mornings of Tuesday February 11 and Saturday February 15, before the public consultation ends on February 17.

The City of London Corporation, which manages the Heath and is behind the £15million project, announced this week that nearly 3,000 people have so far visited displays explaining the plans at East Heath and Parliament Hill.

The City says it is required by reservoir laws to reinforce dams at several Heath ponds, to save lives in the event of a catastrophic flood causing them to collapse, but many oppose the scheme.

The Heath and Hampstead Society launched its Dam Nonsense opposition campaign in November and has won the backing of virtuoso violinist and Heath user Nigel Kennedy, among others.

Visit www.cityoflondon.gov.uk/pondsproject for more on the consultation and details of the walks.
