Car flips at notorious Highgate ‘danger junction’ near fatal crash spot

A motorist had a lucky escape after her car flipped over following a collision near a notorious junction.
The 65-year-old driver was left shaken but uninjured after her vehicle rolled onto its roof in Archway Road, near the crossroads with Southwood Lane, Highgate, at about 6pm last Friday.
The incident has prompted fresh calls for action to improve safety on the stretch of road, which has a long history of serious accidents including a fatal crash that killed 20-year-old motorcyclist Jack Tungate on New Year’s Eve in 2009.
Tom Helliwell, owner of The Woodman pub, in Archway Road, has written to Transport for London (TfL) this week.
He said: “This is a dangerous junction where we have seen minor accidents and near misses on a daily basis.
“This accident could have happened at any time of the day and it is only by luck that pedestrians were not killed.”
Cllr Rachel Allison, Lib Dem member for Highgate ward on Haringey Council, claimed it was a “miracle” that no one was injured.
She said: “I think there is a wider issue concerning pedestrian safety with the removal of the railings at that junction.”
No arrests were made.
