It will take more than just having the most fabulous flowers to win this year’s Haringey in Bloom as the competition gets greener than ever.

The year’s judges will be looking for biodiversity as well as beauty, with each entry being judged on whether it is sustainable, as well as on the impact the colour and use of plants has on the immediate area.

The free council-run competition, sponsored by the Sunshine Garden Centre in Durnsford Road, Bounds Green, will allow green-fingered residents to fight it out in five categories: front gardens; allotment plots; greener school grounds; community garden and business premises.

The winners could even see their entry form part of Haringey’s submission to the London In Bloom competition.

Haringey In Bloom entrants will get 20 per cent money-off vouchers for plants provided by the Sunshine Garden Centre and the council-run Wolves Lane Nursery in Tottenham.

Cllr Nilgun Canver, cabinet member for the environment, said: “Haringey is already a very green borough so this year we are adding another challenge for all entrants. We aim to encourage all gardeners to make the most of Haringey’s green spaces and think about the way they garden and how they encourage biodiversity with their displays.”

Simon Haines, retail manager at the Sunshine Garden Centre, added: “We’re thrilled to again be part of this annual competition. Year on year we see the efforts that residents and community groups go to make the borough bloom and we’re really excited and keen to see this year’s entries.”
