A sign language teacher at a St Pancras school for deaf children has been named teacher of the year at an awards ceremony.

Catherine Drew, an instructor at Frank Barnes School in Camley Street, was nominated for the gong by a former student.

She was praised for her dedication to challenging her pupils on a daily basis so they can reach their full potential.

The ceremony was held in Bloomsbury last month.

After picking up her award from compere, BBC Breakfast’s business journalist Steph McGovern, Ms Drew signed her acceptance speech.

She said: “I was so thrilled just to have been nominated, so to have won is the most amazing feeling.

“It means so much to me.”

The annual awards were hosted by charity Signature, which promotes communication between deaf people and those who can hear.
