Comedian David Mitchell and TV presenter Victoria Coren kicked off the first ever arts festival at the church where they married in Belsize Park by revealing some marital secrets.

The couple, who live in Belsize Park, playfully fired off each other in a light-hearted Q&A session after reading from their books to a packed St Peter’s Church in Belsize Square.

Ms Coren revealed that her new husband can’t make toast – despite receiving a high-end toaster as a wedding present after their ceremony at the church last November.

She revealed: “This morning he managed to burn it on just one side!”

In his defence, Mr Mitchell explained: “The toaster has lots of dials and buttons on it and you have to put in how many slices you want.”

He continued: “Inevitably if you want two slices, you will get one which is burnt on one side and raw on the other.”

The newlyweds read passages from their memoirs, Back Story and For Richer, For Poorer, before giving as good as they got from the audience who put them on the spot with quick-fire questions.

The celebrity couple then signed their books for the crowd, taking time to talk to everyone despite a long queue of eager fans.

Speaking after the event, Mr Mitchell said: “It’s nice to take part in an arts festival held in this beautiful church.”

Ms Coren added: “It’s brilliant that there is a community arts festival. It’s a chance for people to get together at church and not just at the services every Sunday. That is a lovely old-fashioned thing.”

Reverend Paul Nicholson said: “The session with David and Victoria got the week off to a wonderful start. Everyone came away from it feeling like they’d had an insight into their lives.”
