Kevin Kelly, 30, of Tottenham Lane, Crouch End, and his girlfriend Hayley Read, 24, of Bracknell Close, Wood Green, embarked on a spate of robberies targeting elderly women as they slept.

In the first burglary, Kelly broke into an address on Bracknell Close, whilst Read acted as lookout at about 4am on May 4.

Kelly woke up his partially blind victim screaming for money before ransacking her bedroom and making off with cash.

On the same day the pair broke into a second address on the same road. A 72-year-old victim woke up to find the couple searching her house.

The woman was beaten to the floor before the couple fled over a balcony after failing to steal a TV.

Detectives identified the couple using CCTV and they were arrested on May 11.

Kelly was sentenced to 12 years in jail and a further five years on extended licence after pleading guilty to two counts of robbery at Wood Green Crown Court last Thursday.

Read was handed a two-year suspended sentence, 200 hours of community service and a 25-day rehabilitation order after pleading guilty to two counts of burglary at the same court.

Kelly has also been handed a further 30-month concurrent sentence for a separate burglary which he committed at an address in Church End on May 6. On this occasion he got into a property through a rear window before searching the premises. Police say nothing was stolen.

Speaking after the sentencing, DC James Byrne said: “This was a complex offence involving a range of enquiries including CCTV and forensics. We also worked closely with our partners at Haringey Council.

“The vulnerability factor of the victims was a clear aggravating feature.

“Offences like this will not be tolerated and Haringey police will robustly investigate crimes of this nature.

“I would also like to pass on my thanks to ‘Homes for Haringey’ for their victim support and assistance to police investigating this matter,” he added.
