A Highgate writer, teacher and artistic director who has been a vocal campaigner against female genital mutilation (FGM) for decades is staging a literary event featuring writings and performances by opponents of the brutal practice.

Valerie Doulton, director of The Live Literature Company, is holding a free performance evening and forum, The New Spring Without FGM, at Amnesty International’s Human Rights Action Centre in New Inn Yard, Shoreditch, next Thursday (May 1) at 6.30pm.

The event features music, theatre, talks and a panel discussion on the abolition of FGM.

Ms Doulton will be joined, among others, by London Assembly Member Jennette Arnold, a former nurse who will discuss her experiences with victims.

Other speakers include David Maidment, head of the Children’s Human Rights Network at Amnesty, and Nadia el Kholy, education director of the Egyptian Cultural Bureau.

The Swain’s Lane director, who began campaigning against FGM while a volunteer at Amnesty, said: “I think literature can further the understanding of FGM.”
