A senior Haringey councillor is set to stand trial this week charged with attempting to pervert the course of justice.
Cllr Nilgun Canver, a former cabinet member for environment, is accused of lying to police about a car accident her son was involved in. She denies the charge.
A four day trial has been slated for Cllr Canver at Wood Green Crown Court, the first day of which is due to hear an application by the defence to have the case dismissed.
The prosecution alleges that Cllr Canver, 56, told police she was behind the wheel of the family’s BMW on January 24 last year when it hit a man and crashed into a lamppost on Seven Sisters Road, but retracted the claim just minutes later.
Her defence said during the last hearing that they would be arguing her claim was just a “heat of the moment lapse”, and she soon admitted her son was driving.
Burak Canver, 22, was convicted in August 2012 of taking the family’s BMW 520d without consent, failing to stop after an accident and driving without insurance.
