A “predatory” man who attacked and attempted to rape a woman at knifepoint in her own home has been jailed.

Numan Miah broke into the Camden home of the woman in the early hours of Sunday, April 23, and entered the room where she slept.

The 33-year-old was carrying a large knife and when his victim awoke he threatened to kill her if she made a sound. He then attacked her before fleeing minutes later.

After detectives matched a DNA sample to Miah he was arrested at his home in Camden where clothing fitting the description of the attacker was found.

Miah was charged three days after the attack and appeared at Highbury Corner Magistrates’ Court on 27 April.

He was sentenced to 12 years’ imprisonment at Blackfriars Crown Court.

The judge deemed him to be such a dangerous offender that he was also given an extended sentence of four years on license and issued with a sexual harm prevention order, which stops him from contacting the victim for life.

The 12 year sentence followed his guilty plea for attempted rape at Blackfriars Crown Court on Monday, July 31.

The victim, in her 20s, was awarded £1,000 and commended for her bravery by the judge, who in defending herself helped secure evidence that resulted in her attacker’s conviction.

Detective Constable Devina Myrie said: “Miah carried out a horrific attack on his victim.

“He is a predatory offender and the judge recognised how dangerous he is in jailing him for a substantial period.

“He denied his guilt at first, but due to the weight of evidence, he admitted his actions at his first appearance at the crown court.

“He caused his victim great distress and I would like to commend her bravery for assisting the police throughout the investigation and helping bring Miah to justice,” she added.
