A 56-year-old builder has been found guilty of the historic rape and murder of a Hampstead teenager after half a lifetime of evading justice,

Tiler James Warnock, 56, killed 17-year-old Yiannoulla Yianni at her family home in Belsize Road in the summer of 1982.

He was finally caught out when police obtained his DNA after he was arrested on suspicion of distributing indecent images of children in 2013.

The teenager’s lifeless body was found by her parents lying half naked on their bed. She had been strangled and had injuries all over her body,

During the four-week trial at the Old Bailey, Warnock claimed his semen was found at the scene because he had enjoyed a summer fling with Yiannoulla - who was known as Lucy to her family.

But cross-examining Warnock, Crispin Aylett QC, said: “Yiannoulla’s family have waited and waited 33 years to find out whose semen that was.

“That is yours and nobody else’s.

“You have provided an explanation that you had been regularly having sex with Yiannoulla.

“I would suggest that is an insult to the memory of that young, virgin girl who you raped and murdered. You have added a hideous insult to previous injury”.

The jury today returned its verdict following just over two hours of deliberation after the prosecution exposed multiple inconsistencies in Warnock’s account.

The murderer then pleaded guilty to six offences of possessing and distributing indecent images of children.

The judge will sentence Warnock on Monday morning.
