Haringey’s former crime tsar is understood to be considering her options in the wake of being convicted for attempting to pervert the course of justice - including whether to appeal.
Cllr Nilgun Canver was convicted on Thursday after lying to a police officer about who was driving her car the night it crashed in Tottenham’s Seven Sisters Road.
She claimed to have been behind the wheel in order to divert police attention away from her uninsured son, who had taken the BMW without her consent.
Although the deception lasted only a few minutes, a jury convicted her by a majority of 10-2 and she was given a 12-month conditional discharge.
Now her political career - 16 years with Haringey Council including eight years as cabinet member for crime and community safety - lies in tatters. She has gone from having one of the most powerful positions on the council to facing political exile in just a few months. Come this May she will lose her seat at the local elections, as the criminal charge excluded her from running for reselection on a Labour Party ticket last autumn.
For now, Cllr Canver is still a serving Labour councillor in St Ann’s ward, and could theoretically stand for election in May as an Independent.
Since being charged last August she has been suspended by the national Labour Party - prevented from attending or taking part in group meetings, or formally representing the group in any capacity.
The national party is currently reviewing her suspension in light of the outcome of the case, and the Haringey Labour group will follow its lead.
Cllr Richard Wilson, Haringey’s Liberal Democrat leader, said: “It is very sad that Cllr Canver’s lying to the police has led to this court case and to her being sentenced. It is a reminder, however, that no-one is above the law and that lying to the police in particular is a very serious matter.
“As a senior member of Haringey Council’s cabinet, Cllr Canver was in a position of trust and responsibility and I think residents will be shocked by what has happened.”
