Former mayor of Barnet Cllr Brian Coleman was arrested on suspicion of common assault yesterday afternoon (Thursday, September 20).
The councillor, who represents Totteridge ward, was arrested following an incident involving a woman outside a bank in High Road, Finchley.
A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: “A 51-year-old man was arrested in relation to an alleged common assault and taken to a central London police station.
“He has been released on bail to attend a north London police station until late October pending further enquiries.
“An investigation is ongoing.”
Cllr Coleman was unavailable for comment.
The former London Assembly Member for Barnet and Camden lost his City Hall seat after 12 years at the last elections in May.
During his time at City Hall, Cllr Coleman also served as chairman of the London Fire and Emergency Planning Authority, a position which was relinquished when he lost his seat.
