A fugitive conman who swindled a blind widow from Hampstead out of her life savings has been arrested in Germany after a three-year manhunt.
Danish-born Mogens Hauschildt was caught on January 4 in the town of Bad Harzburg on the edge of a mountainous region in central Germany.
A European arrest warrant had been issued after he fled the UK with almost £1million of Pamela Schutzman’s savings. The swindler also sold Ms Schutzman’s home in Finchley Road without her knowledge. She recovered it only last year following three years of court appearances.
In January 2009, Hauschildt was convicted in his absence at Wood Green Crown Court of nine counts of fraud, money laundering and obtaining property by deception.
The 71-year-old swindler now faces being extradited to Britain to be sentenced for his crimes.
He was hauled before Goslar local court in Germany for initial proceedings and is being held in custody until his next court appearance.
