Councils have received their first notices of gay marriage after registers for same-sex ceremonies opened last week.

Same-sex couples who want to wed on the day gay marriage becomes legal, March 29, could register to do so from last Thursday.

Couples must give 15 days’ notice of their intention to marry at a register office, and needed to do so last Thursday if they wish to be among the first to benefit from the Marriage (Same-Sex Couples) Act.

Camden has received 24 notices of gay marriage, while two female couples have notified Barnet Council they intend to wed but wish to do so in central London.

Haringey Council has had three notices from local couples – two will wed in Haringey and one in Islington.

Westminster Council, which has had 10 notices, aims to become the first local authority in the country to host a gay wedding with a ceremony planned at midnight on March 29 at Mayfair Library.
