A pub’s bid to allow outdoor smoking after 11pm has been opposed by a pair of Conservative councillors.
The George, in Haverstock Hill, Belsize Park, wants to let customers smoke in its beer garden and in a seating area at the front after 11pm on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, when it stays open until midnight.
The watering hole, which was closed for four weeks in the spring as it underwent a £350,000 revamp, also wants to remove a licensing condition that forbids new customers entering after 11pm on those nights.
Hampstead Town councillors Chris Knight and Simon Marcus have written to the town hall to object.
Cllr Knight said: “They have applied to allow smoking in the front and rear of the pub until closing when currently both have to be cleared by 11pm – and that’s the way it should stay.
“Enough’s enough, this is application creep and it’s got to stop.
“Residents have the right to peace and quiet at late hours and the Conservative action team will do our best to see we get it for them.”
A Camden Council licensing committee is due to make a decision on November 14.
