Police investigating the killing of a pensioner in Belsize Park have named the victim and arrested a 32-year-old man on suspicion of murder.

Philip Silverstone, 67, was a resident of Spencer House, a block of supported flats in Belsize Park Gardens.

His body was found by police yesterday morning after they were called to Spencer House.

He is believed to have been stabbed to death.

A 32-year-old man was arrested by police today and is being held in custody at a police station.

Officers were called to the sheltered accommodation block at 10.35am yesterday following concern for the occupants of a flat in Spencer House.

They found Mr Silverstone suffering what were believed to be stab wounds and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Next of kin have been informed and a post mortem examination is due to take place tomorrow.

Detectives are keeping an open mind about what may have taken place and are continuing to appeal for witnesses and information.

A police statement said: “Currently there is no clear motive and detectives are not jumping to any to conclusions at this early stage.”

Officers are keen to hear from neighbours or anyone in, or around, the area who may have seen something that struck them as unusual or suspicious.

Anyone who thinks they may be able to help police, or who thinks they saw something, should call the incident room on 020 8721 4205 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
