BBC newsreader Fiona Bruce reassured Hampstead pupils still unsure about their future careers as she spoke about her long and winding route into journalism at an annual school prizegiving.

Ms Bruce told pupils at University College School (UCS) in Frognal, Hampstead, last Thursday that she worked in advertising and as a business consultant before landing a job as a researcher on BBC’s current affairs programme Panorama.

Ms Bruce told pupils: “For those of you in sixth form who haven’t figured out what they want to do – don’t panic!”

On working in the media, she added: “It is often the unknown person who is doing extraordinary things or in an extraordinary position that is the more interesting than the well-known public figure.”

Senior judge Lord Justice Leveson, chairman of the school’s council, welcomed guests before Ms Bruce took to the stage.
