Barnet Liberal Democrat leader Cllr Jack Cohen has warned Labour members they risk handing power to the Conservatives in Childs Hill by campaigning for election votes in the ward.
Cllr Cohen, 67, a serving Childs Hill councillor since 1986, insists Labour cannot win seats in Childs Hill but could take vital votes from the Lib Dems – enabling the Conservatives to claim victory – by concentrating efforts in the ward.
“Labour has always come third in Childs Hill and sometimes a poor third,” said Cllr Cohen. “Let them fight us if they want to risk letting the Tories in.
“Labour are talking up their chances of taking over the council: they are not going to take over the council if they take our votes and let the Tories win it. Lots of Labour’s own activists think it’s madness they are fighting us in Childs Hill.”
Cllr Cohen’s long-standing colleagues in Childs Hill, husband and wife Lord Monroe and Lady Susette Palmer, are both standing down this week, sparking interest in the ward from Labour and the Tories.
But Cllr Cohen believes the Tories could suffer losses across the borough due to the One Barnet outsourcing programme introduced by the administration.
“This is the most awful Conservative administration I have seen since I was elected in 1986,” he said. “They’ve let the officers get on with it. They’ve shown no interest in local people.
“I was at a hustings where the only questions being asked were, ‘Why won’t the council listen to us? Why do they think they can do what they like?’
“What we are offering is 100 per cent commitment from the councillors if we are elected. Our passionate belief is that the council must be there to represent and respond to local residents.”
