Detectives are appealing for witnesses following the accident yesterday morning on the Outer Circle - which is part of the proposed controversial Cycle SuperHighway 11 route.

Police said: “Officers were called to the Outer Circle, NW1 following a report of a collision between a cyclist and a parked car.

“Officers attended along with the London Ambulance Service and London’s Air Ambulance and found the cyclist, a 30-year-old man, cyclist with serious injuries.

“He was taken by ambulance to a central London hospital where he remains in a serious condition.”

“His injuries are not being treated as life threatening but he remains in hospital for treatment.

Witnesses say the 30-year old man smashed through the rear window of an unattended car, which was parked legally.

Channel 5 presenter Matt Barbet, who saw the aftermath, tweeted the Met police “may have saved his life”:

While other witnesses said on Twitter that the scene was “grim” and “did not look good”:

The crash will fuel concerns about plans to run the the CS11 Camden Superhighway through the park’s Outer Circle.

The route, which will link Swiss Cottage and Oxford Circus, has already divided opinion, with opponents arguing it will traffic chaos in the surrounding roads and force vehicles down residential streets. There have been complaints that cyclists race round the park too quickly.

Cycling campaigners fear that ‘NIMBYs’ will scupper plans to limit the number of cars that can use the park each day.

Detectives are appealing for information from anyone who saw the incident, which saw the Outer Circle cordoned off from Avenue Road to Hanover Gate.

A Metropolitan police spokesman said: “Officers would like to speak with anyone who witnessed the collision or the moments leading up to it.”
