In the midst of sorrow and heartbreak for many in our community, Londoners have rallied together to help victims of the devastating earthquake in Turkey.

Many Turkish, Syrian, and Kurdish Londoners come from the disaster-hit area. North London families are particularly affected, with lots of them still desperate for news of loved ones.

The earthquake has claimed thousands of lives and caused widespread destruction, with millions of people impacted across Turkey and Syria.

Broad community action is taking place across our city to support those impacted by this tragedy.

In the face of tragedy Londoners have pulled together in a show of unity and community that is at the heart of what makes London the diverse, open and welcoming city it is.

As their relatives are stranded, Turkish and Syrian community groups have launched fundraisers, mobilised volunteers, and appealed for donations of money, clothes, food and heaters to tackle the freezing temperatures at night.

City Hall is engaging with community groups across London to offer support. I am proud to see London Fire Brigade’s International Search and Rescue team pulling people from the rubble, saving lives. The Met’s Turkish Police Association is taking a lead role in the relief effort and sorting delivering aid. Collections on behalf of the Disasters Emergency Committee will be taking place at some TfL stations over the next couple of weeks. London councils are doing all they can to support residents.

Londoners have once again stepped up to support and help those affected by this devastating natural disaster.

Relief efforts have been incredible so far, bringing hope to a desperate situation - but the true impact is just beginning to emerge.

Investigations into building safety and the response will happen, but for now, our focus must be on the unfolding humanitarian crisis.

Londoners stand with the people of Turkey and Syria. We must continue to support those who have lost friends and relatives and maintain co-ordinated relief efforts to help the tens of millions affected in the aftermath of this tragedy.

If you’re able to, please donate to the Disaster Emergency Committee’s appeal to get help where it’s most needed: dec.org.uk/
