Streetwise Opera

The founder of Streetwise Opera decided to launch the project after working in refuge shelters with the aim of challenging the stereotype that "the homeless" were people you step over when you come out of the opera house. Since then Streetwise Opera's become an innovative organisation that uses music as a tool to help homeless people progress in their lives. The project runs weekly workshops at 11 centres across the country, and aims to kick-start creative activity and personal development, which often has a knock-on effect in other areas of people's lives.

One of its current productions - 'My Secret Heart' - involved 100 homeless people working alongside professional singers and composers to create a show that over 150,000 people have now seen. It then went on tour and received rave reviews in the national press.
