Chinese food often gets a bit of a roasting mainly due to takeaways or eat-as-much-as-you-like buffets where grease is the word.

Restaurant details

Royal China is open daily from noon to 11pm.

It is fully licensed and has disabled access.

The restaurant I visited is located at 24-26 Baker Street, Marylebone.

You can make a reservation by calling 020 7487 4688 or visiting

Children are welcome.

Not only that but generous sprinklings of food enhancer monosodium glutamate are also worth a miss.

To enjoy a real taste of China I strongly recommend you visit a proper restaurant which boasts an al a carte menu and not a sprinkle of MSG in sight.

Royal China in Baker Street, is worth visiting to enjoy the nation’s best dishes.

Renowned for its dim sum it also has a vast menu with dishes I can guarantee you have never heard of or tried.

Amongst its signature dishes are crispy aromatic duck which was definitely the best that I and my dining partner had ever tasted.

The pancakes were far from flimsy (as I usually find they are elsewhere) while the duck was moist and succulent which when accompanied with a rich hoisin sauce and the mandatory spring onions and cucumber was a recipe for success.

Our other starter of jelly fish tossed in cucumber which I had never heard of was equally pleasing.

Don’t be scared of trying it, you’ll be pleasantly surprised.

It was tricky choosing our mains because there were so many mouth-watering options on offer.

The sautéed beef with oyster sauce had tender and flavoursome pieces of meat that melted in our mouths while the sweet and sour fillet of fish was a pleasant surprise. Admittedly the latter might not suit everyone’s taste but it was an interesting alternative instead of the other usual sweet and sour option.

Instead of enjoying the ‘usual option we went for the ‘Royal China’ Lotus rice which consisted of steamed rice with a delicately flavoured sauce and vegetable – served in a lotus leaf parcel.

My only disappointment came with the Singaporean noodles while they was bursting with lots of pork, beef and prawns they seemed to lack the spiciness usually associated with this dish.

Cheng fun Cheng fun

The portions at Royal China are on the generous side so we shared a dessert of black sesame paste in peanut crumbs.

The next time I return to Royal China I will try out their renowned dim sums.

As Monday marks the Chinese New Year the Royal China will be celebrating the year of the Monkey by leaving a red envelope on every table.

For some lucky diners it will contain a voucher giving a free meal up to the value of £100.
