America's 'greatest living poet' to make solo appearance at Hampstead Theatre
Described as 'America's greatest living poet' - Sharon Olds - will be making a rare solo appearance at the Hampstead Theatre on August 27. This is the first time The Poetry Trust has collaborated with the Hampstead Theatre to stage such a unique event.
Sharon will be 'in conversation' with the Aldeburgh Poetry Festival founder Michael Laskey, and will of course read plenty of her poems. There'll also be a chance for the audience to talk to her afterwards at the drinks reception.
Hampstead local Juliet Stevenson is known to be a huge fan and places Sharon as her favourite contemporary poet. This is Sharon's only London appearance, one of just four readings brokered by The Poetry Trust, the others being the Poetry Prom, Edinburgh Book Festival and Toppings Bookshop in Bath.
Recently The Guardian highlighted Sharon's national and international prominence. She caused controversy in the US a few years back when she rejected Laura Bush's invitation to the National Book Festival in Washington. In a much publicised open letter she said that to attend would be to condone the Iraq war and "the current regime of blood, wounds and fire".
