Mission to name West Hampstead paths

THE nameless footpaths of West Hampstead are crying out for recognition and one councillor has launched a mission to find the perfect names.

Cllr John Bryant is on the hunt for new identities for three unnamed footpaths and wants Ham&High readers to come up with ideas.

The Safer Neighbourhood Team in West Hampstead first discovered the three footpaths with no name when they were absent from maps used by police call centre staff.

Whenever people phoned to report a crime, it would take some time to identify where they had taken place, which meant critical lost minutes.

The three paths are those linking the Thameslink station to Broomsleigh Street, another linking West End Lane to Finchley Road running close to the Lithos Road estate, and another linking West End Lane to Lymington Road.

Cllr Bryant said: "A lot of local people call the Thameslink station link the Black Path but I now find this name is also used by those using the link to the Lithos Road estate.

"Council officers have told me the process for officially naming paths needs to start with a local consultation, with three suggested names for each path.

"A number of people have told me they want to retain the Black Path name but I still need two other suggestions for this one to trigger the consultation process.

"So far I am working with Beckford Way and Thameslink Way as alternatives, but would be pleased to receive further suggestions."

To submit suggestions email john.bryant@camden.gov.uk or post to Cllr John Bryant, c/o Camden Town Hall, Judd Street, London, WC1H 9JE.

It is not possible to duplicate an existing name such as Lithos and words like 'path' or 'way' must be used to complete the name.
