Hampstead basement plans thrown out
AN unpopular planning application to build a double basement in Hampstead has been thrown out by Camden's planning committee.
Cathart Ltd applied to the Town Hall for permission to knock down a pool house at 3 Kiddepore Gardens and build an underground swimming pool, car park and accommodation there.
Officers had recommended the application for approval, but after listening to the developer's plans - and objections from nearby residents - councillors rejected the proposal.
Ilan Sharon who spoke on behalf of Cathcart Ltd told last Thursday's meeting: "The development enhances the amenities of the adjacent properties by clearing away the unsightly pool house structure and reinstating the garden that will be nearly double its present area. This will result in improved light and aesthetic views for neighbours."
But Tony Hillier of the Hampstead and Highgate Society warned Camden's planning committee: "The proposed development is huge, on a hill prone to flooding and near to two 90-year-old dwellings which it is likely to severely damage."
He said that the officer's report on whether the development would damage nearby properties was not based on sound soil samples. There was also a risk that it would lead to ground floor flooding, he said.
