HEATHMAN'S DIARY: Artworks sold on net

22 July 2005
A HAMPSTEAD sculptor's works are being auctioned on the internet to raise funds for the rest of his collection's storage.

JW Rhoads retired to Mexico in 2001 but left behind his artworks.

Now the wooden artworks will be sold on thebideasy.com - an eBay auctioneers based in Finchley Road.

The sculptures, often small in size and all made of wood, will be grouped in lots to meet the £50 minimum value that the auctioneer requires. They include pieces that make visual jokes, such as a chair reconstructed into two dimensions and hung on a wall.

American-born Rhoads moved to Paris in the late 50s before settling in Hampstead in the 60s. He exhibited in London, Birmingham and Paris and wrote a novel, The Contract.
