Princess Diana and the schoolboy
 | | Nicholas Akle with our picture of him pointing at Diana, Princess of Wales |
A SCHOOLBOY who was memorably photographed in the Ham&High pointing at Princess Diana as he said 'I've seen you on TV' has blamed her poor punctuality for his outburst.
We reprinted the photo to mark the 10th anniversary of Princess Diana's death last month and now we have tracked down Nicholas Akle.
The 26-year-old was a pupil at Arnold House boys' school in St John's Wood when he was captured along with his class mates meeting the Princess in 1986.
Mr Akle, who now lives in Paddington and runs his own software firm, admits he has not quite managed to live down the incident, but he worked out his excuse a long time ago.
He said: "I remember it quite well. She was late for a long time and we were standing around for a while. We were all there getting very excited. That's what hyped us up a little bit, which could have caused me to point at her and say I've seen you on TV.
"She didn't say anything to me. I think she just laughed a little and walked on."
"I used to watch Spitting Image, so we knew who she was. I'm not saying she looked like that but it was shocking to see her in real life."
Mr Akle's father, Charles, now a leading surgeon on Harley Street, used to keep a copy of the picture in his office to show all of his patients.
This week an inquest into the crash that killed Princess Diana started at the High Court. It is expected to last six months.
