Hampstead basement application turned down over flooding fears

AN APPLICATION to build a basement in Hampstead has been turned down, but objectors say the rules need to be clearer.

Planning bosses on Camden Council's Development Control Committee (February 4) decided the application to dig out a subterranean leisure complex in South Hill Park was not safe because of the risk of flooding.

Chairman of the Heath and Hampstead Society Tony Hillier said: "I'd say it was a very very satisfactory result for Hampstead. There were several grounds upon which it could have been turned down and the committee focused on one which was the risk of flooding from the pond next door."
