BEIJING BLOG

Beijing Blog

OVER the next fortnight the greatest show on Earth will take place in China and I will be penning my take on the Olympic Games for the Ham&High in this blog.

It will be my duty to watch as many of the 300 hours of pure Olympic coverage promised by the BBC as I can. I will be following keenly the progress of fencing champ Richard Kruse from the Salle Paul club in Kentish Town, and 100 metre sprinter Simeon Williamson from Highgate Harriers.

News this morning of two Britons being held in Beijing for unfurling a Free Tibet banner is a reminder of the wider political significance of these games, but personally right now I am just adoring the prospect of the sporting feast to come.

Although track and field athletics is the bread and butter of the Olympics, I am looking forward in particular to some of the other disciplines on show – especially what I consider to be the weirder ones like weightlifting, Greco-Roman wrestling and synchronised swimming.

The mix of thundering power, poise, endurance and precision displayed by competitors across all disciplines is a fabulous spectacle upon which I cannot wait to gorge. Interactive viewing options mean I will have a choice of six different channels at any one time, and my only serious problem will be deciding which one to watch. Let the games commence!

I’m keen to hear your views on anything that is remotely Olympics-related. Please email tan.parsons@hamhigh.co.uk with your comments.
