The demise of pubs is always a sad thing so we are looking back at some that have been lost in a vibrant and beautiful corner of north London.
The Lost Pubs Project archives the decline of the English pub and using pictures and tips from its website www.closedpubs.co.uk, this page shows five pubs in Hampstead that closed their doors for one last time in the past.
The Adelaide
The Adelaide was situated at 1 Adelaide Road and was cited in the 1944 census, but is now sadly demolished.
Jack Straws Castle
Situated on North End Way, Jack Straws Castle is now in residential use.
The building dates from 1965 and replaced the original pub of the same name on this site, which was destroyed in an air raid on March 19, 1941.
The Belsize Tavern
Situated at 29 Belsize Lane, the former pub is now used as a restaurant.
The White Horse
The White Horse was situated at 154-155 Fleet Road.
This pub closed in 2014 then reopened and a year later closed again and reopened for a little while before closing.
The pub eventually reopened as The Cork & Bottle. However it was boarded up shortly after March 2020 and remains closed.
The Nags Head
The Nags Head was situated at 79-81 Heath Street.
Known for a time as The Cruel Sea, it was an estate agent's office before being replaced by a bakery.
